This survey has two goals:
1. To gauge how independent businesses are faring in today’s economy.
2. To assess whether people are more aware and supportive of locally owned, independent businesses.

Thank you all for supporting the 2010 You Are Here fall fundraiser. It was quite a successful event. We had great music from Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns and Country Fried and great food from restaurants and caterers from throughout the Greater New Orleans Region. Building on its history of community involvement and the tradition that began with the launch of its grant program two years ago, Markham Vineyards will again award $25,000 to two passionate and inspiring individuals committed to bettering their communities through impactful initiatives. This year, Kellie Grengs of The New Freret has entered the contest and is now a finalist for Markham Vineyards’ the Markham Mark of Distinction Award.

As the black tide continues to rise in the Gulf, several organizations are reaching out to offer helping hands by keeping the public informed, providing cleanup assistance and providing access to resources for the businesses and fishermen affected by this disaster. Louisiana’s seafood is a billion dollar industry that accounts for more than 30 percent of the nation’s seafood production.

The Louisiana Economic Development and the U.S. Small Business Administration opened Business Recovery Centers in six southeastern Louisiana parishes. Owners of small businesses who have been affected financially by the Deepwater Horizon BP Oil Spill can visit the centers to speak with SBA and Louisiana Small Business Development Center Network, or LSBDC, representatives about their options regarding the SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan, or EIDL, program.

Stay Local! is working with the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) and the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) to conduct a national survey of independent businesses. Stay Local!, the flagship initiative of New Orleans-based nonprofit The Urban Conservancy, is partnering with local publishing company Renaissance Publishing to create a definitive “Guide to Buying Locally,” to be released just in time for Jazz Fest. The guide will include the more than 1,500 businesses listed on the Stay Local! website.

During the spring of 2009, Civic Economics in partnership with Stay Local! will be conducting a study to determine the economic impact of a collection of local, independent Magazine Street corridor businesses relative to a large-format, big box retailers such as Wal-Mart. This study will quantify the enhanced benefits provided by a rich tapestry of local firms, providing local stakeholders and policymakers with a clear direction for future economic development initiatives elsewhere in the city. We are asking business owners on or adjacent to Magazine Street to complete this survey.
