Please join us for a workshop conducted by co-founder and co-director of the American Independent Business Alliance (www.amiba.net), Jeff Milchen, on Monday, March 31 from 6 – 8 pm at the AT&T Technology Center, Room 112, on UNO’s Lakefront Campus in the Research and Technology Park (see map: http://www.uno.edu/university/maps/maincamp.asp).

The workshop will focus on the vital importance of local ownership and community-based business toward a healthy and self-determined community. Among other things, the workshop will explore the role of independent businesses, communities, and citizens in:

  • maintaining community character—defying homogenization of the city you love;
  • strengthening local economic vitality and stability—the multiplier effect;
  • world economics and local impacts-the growth imperative of transnational corporations and their support structures (governments, the WTO, international trade agreements, etc.);
  • the link between economic democracy and political democracy;
  • keeping decision-making power within the community—how conscious personal decision-making puts citizens in charge of overall community well-being;

This workshop will be filmed as part of “Independent America: Rising from the Ruins,” a documentary focused on New Orleans’ small businesses and their role in New Orleans’ recovery. The film is a sequel to the 2005 film “Independent America” (www.independentamerica.net).

This is a great opportunity to showcase New Orleans’ entrepreneurial “independent streak” and strengthen it at the same time.

The event is free and open to the public.
