UNO to Host Second Annual Sustainability and Recovery Forum
Green Building will be the topic, as The University of New Orleans hosts the second annual public forum on Sustainability and the Recovery of New Orleans.
Dr. Peter Newman, professor of sustainability at Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia, and the Harry W. Porter Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia, will launch his new book, Cities as Sustainable Ecosystems (Island Press, 2008).
The panel will also feature the following speakers:
Dr. Edward Blakely, recovery director, City of New Orleans, and Visiting Professor, Department of Planning and Urban Studies, UNO.
Charles Allen III, assistant director, Tulane/Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research (CBR).
Dr. John L. Renne, UNO assistant professor of urban planning and associate director of the UNO Transportation Center, will serve as forum host and moderator.
From 2001-2003, Dr. Newman directed the production of Western Australia’s Sustainability Strategy, the first state sustainability strategy in teh world. From 2004-2005, he served as sustainability commissioner in Sydney, advising the government on planning issues. He was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the University of Virginia from 2006 to 2007. His book Sustainability and Cities was introduced at the White House in 1999.
Blakely, an international expert in urban planning and economic development, was appointed by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin in January 2007 to lead the post-Katrina recovery effort. Most recently, he was professor at the University of Sydney. He has published numerous articles and books and received many honors and awards.
Allen is assistant director for external relations at the Center for Bioenvironmental Research where he directs the Sustainable Urban Ecosystem (UrbanEco) Initiative. Through UrbanEco, the CBR is working to help the Holy Cross/Lower Ninth Ward community chart a path toward an energy efficient, sustainable post-Katrina recovery. He also serves as professor of the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association and was recently appointed to the board of directors of the U.S. Green Building Council (USBGC).
