CHALMETTE, La. — Parish leaders and residents were taken by surprise after Lowe’s announced Monday it is closing 20 stores, including its outlet in Chalmette.
“I called over (the store) yesterday to come buy a refrigerator,” said customer Jessie Redd.
Redd, however, said he was surprised when he found the front doors of Lowe’s locked tight, and even the huge letters across the front of the store were gone.
The outlet’s 96 employees were called to the store Sunday evening, and they were told it was shutting down for good, but parish leaders said there was not even a courtesy phone call to let them know what was coming.
“I haven’t even been able to talk to the local management whether they knew this was coming, or whether this was a truly corporate level decision that was implemented literally overnight,” said St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro.
Lowe’s corporate headquarters said the Chalmette store employees will be paid for 60 days with benefits.
“I thought they had good customers. I see a lot of cars in (their) parking lot every time I come, so I don’t know what the deal is,” said customer Gary Barthelemy.
